May, a Month of Celebrations

Cinco De Mayo, Mother's Day, Proms,Memorial Day
May is the busiest month of the year for most retail flower shops. Here in New England it's finally starting to feel like spring and people are ready to celebrate! Recently I've noticed more people embracing the Mexican holiday, Cinco De Mayo. It's an unlikely holiday for us to celebrate in Massachusetts but any excuse for a party, right? It would be so fun to decorate with flowers for this I keep hoping someone will come in the shop and place an order for their Cinco De Mayo party. I'm picturing lots of colorful tropical flowers in vibrant orange, reds and lime! Hey a florist can dream right?
Realistically though, Mother's Day orders will soon be our focus the biggest flower holiday of the year which falls on May 8th this year. I've been working on some sweet specials that I'm pretty sure Moms are going to love! Here's a preview of one of my favorites, called Wild About Mom.
Following fast on the heels of Mothers Day is Prom season. CCHS has theirs on May 14th and the following Friday is the Acton Boxborough prom. Proms are much more elaborate than when I was growing up and the costs associated with them have risen accordingly. You can read some crazy prom stories here if you want to feel better about what you spent on your daughter's prom dress! As a florist I keep up with all the trends so we carry all the latest in prom wristlets which are more like bracelets now, compared the the elastic bands we wore in the 70's and 80's. Along with the flowers there are all sorts of added embellishments like sparkly gemstones, pearl sprays, feathers, and of course ribbon in every shade imaginable.
Unlike the big bulky corsages of the past, today's wristlets are more petite and the girls tend to wear them all evening because they aren't uncomfortable. We still occasionally get moms that want something made bigger when they come in to pick up the flowers, but we try to appeal to the teenager that has to wear it and they really don't want their Mom's corsage!
Ending the hectic month May we have Memorial Day, falling on the 30th this year. Less a time of celebration, and more for reflection, this is a time to honor our deceased family members, friends and fallen hero's. At Concord Flower Shop we make many laurel wreaths used at monuments in the area. Mixed flowering planters are also a popular choice for decorating graves.
In addition to all these floral events we have weddings and graduations which extend well into June and beyond. So that's a florist's life this time of the year and by the time it slows down a bit in July we are ready to take our vacations!
